Canadian Film Explores Importance of Free Play |

Canada’s CTV has produced a new one-hour documentary that looks at the importance of free play for children. In “Lost Adventures of Childhood,” filmmaker Scott Harper makes a powerful case that free play is not a glorious time waster but possibly the key to the healthy development of a child’s mind. The documentary will air nationwide on March 14. |

Efforts to reconnect children and nature are gaining momentum in Kansas. More than a dozen Kansas groups have joined the effort to insure passage of the federal No Child Left Inside Act; Botanica, the Wichita Gardens recently embarked on a capital campaign for a new children’s garden; and child-care providers, health advocates, architects, and others recently gathered in the state for a “natural playscapes” workshop. |

Vitamin D Deficiency Soars Among Teens in U.S. |

Three-quarters of U.S. teens and adults are deficient in vitamin D, according to findings recently published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. That figure marks a dramatic increase from just a few decades ago and has health experts concerned, as a lack of vitamin D has been linked to rickets (weak bones) in children and thinning bones in the elderly; scientists also believe it may play a role in heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. |

The Nature Education for Kids task force of Lawrence, Kansas, hosts a summit April 1 featuring a special presentation by Cheryl Charles, president of the Children & Nature Network. The task force, comprised of local educators, parents, recreation leaders, and others, has been meeting since last September. Chief among its many goals: the building of a community wellness campus that will feature a walking trail and a “miracle field” for handicapped kids. |

Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, and Susan Linn, director of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, both will be featured speakers at Radical Amazement: The Spirituality of Childhood, a conference taking place April 2 and 3 in Omaha. Breakout sessions at the conference will cover such topics as landscaping a backyard for nature play and using children's literature to enhance nature play. |
